I don’t know about you, but I am often five steps ahead of myself, looking forward to “Someday” and what might happen in the future. I would venture to guess this is a common denominator among fellow dreamers. After all, visionaries do just that…they imagine how the future will be better and improved with the ideas and ambitions they hold.
While it is exciting to look down the road and dream, we need to be mindful of being present today as well. My head can often be in the clouds, but my feet need to be grounded too.
Several years ago I wrote a song for two of my friends that were waiting on God for some really big things. One was, and still is, praying for God to bring her a spouse. The other was waiting on God to help her through infertility (He did a miracle and provided them with a child, and now, years later, they are praying to have another). Take a look at the lyrics below and then we’ll discuss how they relate to dreamers like us.
Waitin’ On Someday (by Katie Reid, with Kris Kelliher, copyright 2011)
People tell me I’m strong, and sometimes that’s true
But mostly I’m just hanging on, to the steadfast grip of You
Life has turned out differently, than I once had planned
But through the hills and valleys, I can clearly see Your hand
As I waitin’ on someday
Living in the moment
Hopin’ in Your promise
To uphold me
Until Someday
I’ll keep going
Not just survive
But seek Your glory
Sometimes the pain is blinding, and the road keeps winding
So I’ll put one foot before the next, and trust that You know best
‘Cuz You are near and You care, about these dreams inside
And all my deepest longings, the desire for new life
Waitin’ on Someday
Living in the moment
Hopin’ in Your promise
To uphold me
Until Someday
I’ll keep going
Not just survive
But seek Your glory
Sometimes I’m graceful, other times I stumble, sometimes I’m restless, other times I’m humbled.
As I waitin’ on someday.
The waiting room can be pregnant with purpose. There may be others right there with us who need encouragement before they head in to deliver what God has implanted within. There may be a professional present who needs some cheering on after years of pouring out themselves to those on this journey. There may be someone serving nearby who needs a smile, a listening ear, and a “thank you.” It can be challenging to linger in the waiting room, when we are bulging with anticipation about the coming miracle. But, you can miss out on the deep joys of “Someday” if you rush through the process and aren’t really living in the moment…in the gift of today.
Don’t get me wrong, it is crucial for dreamers to do just that- dream! We are wired that way on purpose. But, we also need to be reminded to not let our dreams, and what might happen, completely overshadow the present. It is a present, as our dreams are too.
What are you waiting on today? As we wait, let’s remember this…that He is near and He cares, about these dreams inside and all our deepest longings, the desire for new life.
Psalm 33:20-22 “Our soul waits for the Lord; he is our help and our shield. For our heart is glad in him, because we trust in his holy name. Let your steadfast love, O Lord, be upon us, even as we hope in you.”
Waiting on “Someday” with you,
Katie
P.S. I would love to hear about your God-sized dream! What is this dream that God has given you and where are you in the process? How can we be praying for you while you wait?
