Things We Talk About:
- Fledge by Brenda Yoder
- Midlife Moms podcast
- Don’t steal the struggle
- Definition of entitlement, enmeshment, and co-dependency
- Joel 2:25
Brenda unpacks the following definitions during our conversation:
Entitlement: giving our kids a false sense of what they deserve without effort, without growth, without a sense of responsibility or ownership.
Enmeshment: an overly involved intertwining of parent and child, when we don’t separate our children’s lives and their stories and decisions from our own.
Co-dependency: when one person supports the needs of the other person in a way that does not allow the other person to be responsible for their own behaviors and choices; an unhealthy interdependence between parent and child.
Keep these 5 things in mind when you’ve blown it as a parent:
- You did the best you knew at the time.
- Own up to your mistakes and ask your child for forgiveness.
- Walk in a new way.
- Give grace to yourself and grace to your kids.
- Have hope in the redemption available through Christ (He heals broken relationships).
